Red Dead Redemption 2: How to Upgrade Ingredients Satchel

Well howdy partner. This is another game guide, just like this one. But this time, we’ll be looking at RDR2!

Welcome to the extensive world of Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This is a game where you can ride around the world and become whatever you want to be, but mostly you’ll be shooting wild life and people (mostly bad ones). You’ll quickly notice the giant menu of items that you can use for various purposes. But this comes with a very limited space. We’ll be teaching you how to efficiently increase the most important starting satchel, the Ingredients Satchel.

Unlock Ingredients Satchel Upgrade

To begin the upgrade, you must first have access to the upgrade. You must first fulfill these two requirements:

Once you’ve done that, the upgrade can now be accessed.

What Do You Need

All your upgrading needs can be found right in the camp. Find Mr. Pearson aka The Cook of the gang to check out the recipes of the upgrade you’re looking for. We’re looking for the ingredients satchel upgrade, so head on there.

Press “E” to access the Crafting Upgrades menu. Select Satchel and hover on Ingredients Satchel.

Right below you can see the ingredients needed to make the upgraded satchel. For this instance, we’ll be needing:

  • 1 x Perfect Deer Pelt
  • 1 x Perfect Badger Pelt
  • 1 x Perfect Squirrel Pelt

The upgrade did not specify a specific species of animals, so you can hunt for any type of deer and squirrel that you come across. The only thing you should note is the quality of each of the pelt you’ve collected must be in perfect condition.

Hunting Efficiently in RDR2

Hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 does take some skills. There are two main things to look out for if you want to bag perfect pelts from your hunts. This will ensure that you’ll get your perfect pelt every time you take the kill shot. This will also help you save a lot of time when you’re hunting as it does take some of your time to find the animal and successful harvest perfect pelts.

Hunting Weapons

The best 2 weapons to use in your hunts are the Varmint Rifle and the Rolling Block Rifle. You can also go all natural with the bow and arrow, but it might be a tedious experience.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Varmint Rifle
You’ll receive the Varmint Rifle pretty early in the game.

The Varmint Rifle is a low-powered rifle which is mainly used to hunting small critters. We’re talking about rabbits, squirrels and other rodents scampering around the map. Remember to only use the Varmint Rifle for smaller animals as it will allow you to get a kill clean without ruining the pelt.

You can also attach a scope to any other rifles you have to make hunting easier.

All Repeater and Rifles would be suitable to hunt bigger game such as deer and other roaming carnivores. But I prefer the Rolling Block Rifle as it comes with a scope and allows you to get your kills from a distance. Sneaking up to a group of deer might take your time to line up your shot. On the other hand you can take out a target from a long distance and get a clean shot in.

Location

The Red Dead Redemption 2 world is huge. Since we’re not looking for any specific species of the targeted animals, you can pretty much shoot down any squirrel or deer species that you come across. The badger however can be a little difficult to locate since it seems to only spawn in certain locations. To bump into a badger, depending on where you are in the story, here are a couple of locations to hunt for badgers:

Badger locations across the RDR2 world.
  • Lemoyne – The best place to find badgers is in Lemoyne, west of the Kamassa River. Badgers can be found throughout the Scarlett Meadows and the area around Rhodes.
  • West Elizabeth – Explore the edges of the map north/northeast of the Aurora Basin in Tall Trees, ranging the area towards the northern part of the Upper Montana River.
  • Tumbleweed – This is far location, but Tumbleweed down in the far south also has a decent badger population.
  • New Hanover/Ambarino – And up north, head to the eastern side of the Dakota River. Badgers appear in the Cumberland Forest and up towards Bacchus Station in fairly large numbers.

Perfect Pelt Every Time

You got your guns and your locations. Now, pay attention to the info in the bottom right corner every time you aim your gun at an animal.

You’ll notice 3-stars highlighted beside the name of the animal. This indicates that this particular animal has a high quality pelt. Remember that not all animals have the same quality of pelt, so pick them out before you start blasting.

Dead Eye Everything

Don’t forget to use your Dead Eye ability before taking the shot. This ensures that you’re hitting the animal in the right spot, preserving the quality of the pelt by delivering the one-shot kill. Multiple shots or bad shot placement will deteriorate the quality of the pelt. Dead Eye also helps to get your shot in while the animal is attempting to run away.

Dead Eye clean shot
Blowing up any living creatures’ brains off would do the trick everytime.

Visit Pearson For Upgrades

Collect the 3 perfect pelts and head back to Pearson. Select “Donate” and give Pearson the required pelts. Once you’ve done that, select “Crafting Upgrades” and see whether the pelts are there. You’ll notice that the donated pelts will be in the ingredients and menu.
